ESXi 6.5U1 NetApp LUN Boot Target Install Error
Findings:
We were recently trying to install ESXi version 6.5U1 on 8GB NetApp SAN boot LUN's for our new CISCO UCS B200M5 blades. Installation would fail almost immediately with the below error. We had no issues installing a fresh copy of ESXi version 6.0 to these same LUN's.
The Error:
"Unable
to successfully execute 'tryFormatDevice' after 3 tries. Installation cannot
continue."

Resolution:
After doing some research we started to find other people posting on threads about this same problem. It seems that increasing the LUN size from 8GB to 12GB was"fixing" this issue for other people. We gave it a shot and it seems to have worked for us as we are now able to install ESXi 6.5U1 without problems. We are assuming that this is a bug in the 6.5U1 release!

DeleteAs a test did you guys try to increase your LUN size to see if it makes a difference? This was the only solution I had to be able to cleanly install ESXi.
